Our Story &
Birding Mission
Harlequin Birding Tours was born in the heart of Southeast Alaska, fueled by a lifelong obsession with this world's critters and a love for the beautiful and wild spaces they call home. Our mission is simple: to share the raw beauty of Alaska’s birdlife with small, intimate groups. We believe that true birding requires patience and silence, away from the crowds, allowing for genuine connections with the species that thrive along our rocky coastlines and in the moss laden canopies of our towering evergreen giants.

Tyler Stern is the owner and operator of Harlequin Birding Tours. Tyler is a career naturalist, guide, and educator and brings with him over 20 years of experience in the field.
From a young age it was obvious to his parents and everyone who knew him that his uncanny fascination with animals was to become a lifelong obsession. In his late teens he started volunteering as an educator and naturalist on whale watching boats for the Birch Aquarium at Scrips Institution of Oceanography. Shortly there after, Tyler landed his first job as a sea kayak guide in La Jolla, California. The combination of being active, outdoors, seeing the wildlife he loved, and also educating the public through immersive experience in nature was a powerful tonic for a young Tyler. What appeared to most to be a fun summer job eventually became a career which has taken Tyler all over the world, working in the very places he was mesmerized by in the nature documentaries he grew up on.
Tyler has guided in over 20 different countries, but maintains that there is truly no where else just quite like Alaska! Tyler has worked as a guide and naturalist in the great state of Alaska for over 10 years. In fact, he loved it so much he moved here permanently in 2020. It is safe to say Tyler has fallen in love with Alaska, and a girl in Alaska, who he is now lucky enough to call his Wife.
Today, Juneau is home, and what a incredible home base for adventure and wildlife viewing it is!
